Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Refugee Protection at UNHCR’s 76th Executive Committee

At the ongoing 76th Executive Committee of the UNHCR in Geneva, Hon. Alhaji Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka delivered Ghana’s statement, commending outgoing High Commissioner Filippo Grandi for his remarkable leadership amid a global displacement crisis and severe funding shortfalls.

Ghana expressed deep concern over UNHCR’s $1.4 billion funding gap, which threatens life-saving aid for over 11 million refugees and education and healthcare for over 6 million children. The Minister called for renewed international solidarity and burden-sharing to restore hope to displaced persons worldwide.

Highlighting national efforts, Ghana announced progress in issuing indefinite residence permits to former refugees and the implementation of the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness Sustainability Programme (GRASP), which aims at establishing a flagship livelihood activity for refugees and their host communities.

Ghana also presented Mr Matthew Kwesi Crentsil as its candidate for UN High Commissioner for Refugees, marking a potential historic first for Africa since the establishment of the Office of UNHCR 75 years ago.
