6TH WORLD CONFERENCE OF SPEAKERS OF PARLIAMENT

The 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament was held from 29th to 31st July, 2025, at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland. The theme of the Conference was “A world in turmoil: Parliamentary cooperation and multilateralism for peace, justice and prosperity for all”.

Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, led Ghana’s delegation to the meeting. The delegation included H.E. Emmanuel Antwi, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ghana to the UN office and other international organisations in Geneva, Amb. Jonathan Rexford Magnusen, the Speaker’s Advisor on International Relations and Diplomacy, Mr. Charles Dery Tenzagh, Principal Assistant Clerk, Prof. Damasus Tuurosong, the Executive Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Salia Edward Aabonaa, Assistant Clerk IV,  Mr. Mohammed Hardi Nyagsi, Coordinating Director of Parliament,  and  Mrs. Audrey Neequaye, Schedule Officer for Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) matters at the Ghana Permanent Mission in Geneva.

Delivering an intervention at the conference, the Rt. Hon. Speaker urged Parliamentarians to rise to the challenge, not only to legislate and oversee issues within our borders but also to shape the moral, political, and institutional framework of a more just and peaceful international order. He also called for renewed parliamentary leadership by formalising inter-parliamentary dialogue on peace and security, integrating the SDGs, investing in digital transformation and research capacity, advancing inclusive and gender-responsive legislation, championing reforms in global institutions, and strengthening frameworks for parliamentary diplomacy. The Rt. Hon. Speaker concluded by advocating for the creation of stronger alliances, bolder reforms, and a renewed commitment to multilateralism that truly benefits all of humanity.

Among the key outcomes of the Conference was the adoption of a high-level declaration addressing global crises and outlining essential policy transitions needed for peace, justice, and prosperity.

The declaration also urged governments to rebuild public trust in democracy, fully integrate the UN Sustainable Development Goals into national policy, and ensure that legislation is grounded in science and evidence. Misinformation, it said, must be tackled through transparent, accountable policymaking.
